Celebrate the Legacy of Les McCann – Contribute to the Music Scholarship Endowment Created in His Honor
Les McCann was more than a musical pioneer; he was a creative force of nature. With over sixty albums to his name and a career spanning decades, Les McCann left a lasting mark on the world of music. From his groundbreaking debut album, “Les McCann Plays the Truth,” to the iconic platinum selling “Swiss Movement: Live at Montreux,” with Eddie Harris (and its smash hit single “Compared To What”), Les McCann’s contributions to music are truly extraordinary.
His collaborations with legends like Lou Rawls, The Jazz Crusaders, Stanley Turrentine, as well as his discovery and signing of Roberta Flack (“Les McCann Presents Roberta Flack First Take”), showcase his diverse and influential career.
Les McCann’s creativity extended beyond music into painting and photography, capturing the vibrant culture of his time in his book, “Invitation to Openness: The Jazz and Soul Photography of Les McCann 1960-1980.”
His huge influence expanded even further as hundreds of rap and hip-hop artists voraciously sampled his music, including, Notorious B.I.G, Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, Mobb Deep, Warren G, Naughty By Nature, and Snoop Dogg.
In honor of his remarkable life and career, Les’ longtime manager/producer, Alan Abrahams, established the Les McCann Music Scholarship Endowment at his cherished alma mater, Los Angeles City College. This endowment is dedicated to supporting the next generation of talented musicians who, inspired by Les McCann’s legacy, will continue to shape the future of music.
