Student Spotlight: Joseph Alvarez
Los Angeles City College student Joseph Alvarez is preparing for an exciting new chapter as he transfers to University of California, Los Angeles this fall to study Financial Actuarial Mathematics in the College of Letters and Science.
During his time at LACC, Alvarez distinguished himself through academic excellence, leadership, and service. As a Supplemental Instruction Leader for Calculus III and Vice President of the LACC Math Club, he helped support student success through tutoring, campus outreach, and the development of study resources designed to make mathematics more accessible.
His achievements were recognized this semester with four scholarships: the Ralph Bunche Program Honors Scholarship, the Ralph Bunche Scholars Program Transfer Scholarship, the Jacob and Rose Rubinstein Scholarship, and the ASG Leadership Scholarship.
Alvarez credits his success to the support of his family, professors, mentors, friends, and the LACC and MESA communities. While balancing work, tutoring, long commutes, and challenging coursework, he developed resilience and a strong commitment to his goals.
As he prepares for UCLA, Alvarez is grateful for the opportunities he found at LACC and looks forward to continuing his studies in mathematics and actuarial science while pursuing future leadership and mentorship opportunities. We are extremely proud of Joseph and wish him all the best during this exciting new chapter.
