LACC Foundation Hosts Inspiring Nick Beck Investigative Journalism Lecture Series with Christine Devine
On May 25, 2023, the LACC Foundation proudly hosted the Nick Beck Investigative Journalism Lecture Series, featuring the esteemed journalist Christine Devine at LACC’s Holmes Hall. This event provided a unique opportunity for attendees to connect with the Emmy-award winning television news anchor.
The evening began with a warm welcome from LACC President Dr. Mary Gallagher, followed by an introduction by LACC Journalism Professor Rhonda Guess. The highlight of the event was an engaging interview conducted by LACC Journalism Alumna Mary Paronyan. Through this interview, attendees gained inspiring insights into Christine Devine’s career and personal experiences.
Wednesday’s Child
Christine Devine shared how she adapted to new ways of working as an anchor and reporter, particularly during the challenges of the pandemic. One of the most touching moments was when she discussed her involvement with ‘Wednesday’s Child,’ a public service initiative devoted to finding adoptive homes for children in foster care. Since 1994, Christine has profiled foster children looking for adoptive homes, resulting in more than 500 adoptions.
During the interview, Christine expressed her gratitude for being able to witness the program’s impact firsthand, sharing her personal experience of healing through this program. A special moment occurred when a current LACC student in the audience, who was a former foster youth adopted through “Wednesday’s Child,” was reunited with Christine. This student is part of the LACC Guardian Scholars program, which empowers current and former foster youth at LACC.
Christine’s dedication to the well-being of these children was evident as she shared stories of her continued contact with many of them, offering support and guidance throughout their lives. She also shared her own experiences and the sacrifices made along the way, highlighting the balance between work-life and family that is often required in the industry.
The evening concluded with Christine Devine responding to questions from several students and community members. LACC Foundation Executive Director Dr. Lisa Nashua presented Christine with a banner as a token of appreciation for her inspiring lecture.
The LACC Foundation is grateful to Christine Devine for sharing her experiences and insights, highlighting the profound impact journalism can have on society.
