Student Spotlight: Trina Derricks
What began as a moment of personal hardship has transformed into a powerful story of resilience and determination for Trina Derricks, a Television Production major at Los Angeles City College (LACC). Derricks, who is also pursuing a certification in Japanese, first enrolled at LACC in 2010 after experiencing a difficult period in her life that led her to seek shelter housing. A former Hollywood Boulevard dancer, she recalls a pivotal moment that changed her path. “One day I woke up and realized I wanted to make a change in my life, so I did” Derricks said. That decision led her to LACC, where she quickly found both purpose and passion.
Drawn to the Television Production program, Derricks describes herself as a natural on-screen talent and says the program felt like a seamless fit. “The strength of the TV and Film department is that you get to inspire people and bring out your creativity,” she explained. “You also have the opportunity to learn from students and professors.”
Derricks credits much of her growth and confidence to the support she received from faculty, particularly instructor Jen Vaughn, whom she says helped her embrace her presence on screen. “She made me feel comfortable being a big woman on screen,” Derricks shared. Throughout her academic journey, Derricks has also received crucial support from the City Cares Network and the Los Angeles City College Foundation, both of which provided aid and assistance during challenging times. Outside the classroom, Derricks remains active in her community, volunteering with the Investigation Bureau while also pursuing acting opportunities within the entertainment industry. Reflecting on her journey, Derricks expresses pride and gratitude. “I am proud of myself for not giving up,” she said. “Getting a college degree is on my bucket list.”
As she looks ahead to her anticipated graduation in Spring 2027, Derricks has ambitious plans to produce and direct, aiming to make a lasting impact in the entertainment world. She also offers words of encouragement to others considering a return to education. “If you feel like you are too old or inexperienced to go back to school, give it a try,” she advised. “Give yourself room for grace and communication, and align with programs you identify with.”
With her determination and passion, Trina Derricks is not only rewriting her own story but inspiring others along the way. LACC proudly celebrates her as a valued member of its community and a rising voice in the next generation of storytellers.
