The Courage to Right a Woman's Wrongs

LACC Theatre Academy presents The Courage to Right a Woman’s Wrongs by Ana Caro

EAST HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA – The Los Angeles City College Theatre Department is set to perform Ana Caro’s classical play “The Courage to Right a Woman’s Wrongs.” The performances will take place on the outdoor stage at Los Angeles City College’s Camino Theater on Thursday, October 26, Friday, October 27, and Saturday, October 28 at 7 pm, with a special matinee on Saturday, October 28 at 2 pm. Admission is free.

A Classic Reimagined

This imaginative play reinterprets the Don Juan myth through the eyes of Doña Leonor, who seeks to restore her tarnished honor. Disguised as a man named Don Leonardo, she pursues Don Juan across Europe to execute a daring revenge plan filled with passionate poetry, sword-fighting, and cloak-and-dagger scheming.

A Forgotten Playwright

Ana Caro, the playwright and poet behind this work, is one of the few female voices from Spain’s Golden Age of theater. Born a slave in 16th-century Spain, Caro rose to become a respected playwright. Despite her gender, her work was celebrated alongside that of masters like Lope de Vega and Pedro Calderon de la Barca. “The Courage to Right a Woman’s Wrongs” showcases her deep understanding of dramatic conventions and her unique perspective as a woman navigating the double standards of her time. The play’s modernity is striking, and the cast is confident it will earn its place among the classics. Sam Yang, who plays Prince Ludovico, shares, “Courage is a timeless story that plays with gender roles to challenge societal norms that oppress those who have no choice but to live within them.”

Critical Acclaim

The Maryland Theater Guide has praised the play for its “sly and delicate balancing act.” Director Clarinda Ross-Gress adds, “The Courage to Right a Woman’s Wrongs is full of adventure, swordplay, sexy love triangles, and intrigue. To me, this play is every bit as good in terms of plot and language as the best of Shakespeare.”
